Sacramento Intermodal Transportation Center, Sacramento, CA

AVA’s Role: Anil Verma Associates, Inc. (AVA) served as a consultant to the City of Sacramento for development of a multimodal transportation center on the 38-acre site of an existing, operational railroad station. AVA provided rail and vehicular transportation planning services for this major intermodal joint-development project. The team analyzed on-site, local, and regional transportation issues, planned the station to accommodate future growth, and developed urban-design concepts for the site. The proposed intermodal center was projected to serve more than 30,000 passengers per day by 2020. The planning process required close coordination with multiple transit agencies and stakeholders and included extensive public involvement through a series of community workshops and presentations.

Description: The Sacramento Intermodal Transportation Center was envisioned as a major hub for the regional ground-transportation network, integrating multiple transit systems with commercial, retail, residential, recreational, and entertainment development. The project incorporated the historic railroad depot and related structures into a modern multimodal facility serving Amtrak, CCJPA Capitol Corridor commuter service, San Joaquin Corridor rail service, light rail transit, Greyhound and regional buses, Union Pacific freight rail, and potentially a future intra- and interstate high-speed rail system. The planning concept also included reconfiguration of Interstate 5 ramps and proposed tunneling of 6th and 7th Streets beneath the existing railroad tracks to improve circulation and reduce congestion. Pedestrian walkways were planned to connect the transportation center with the existing Railroad Technology Museum and provide convenient access to Old Sacramento’s retail, entertainment, and visitor destinations. The overall development was organized around the historic railroad depot, preserving it as the architectural centerpiece and central hub of the local and regional transportation network.
