BART to Livermore Valley Extension (BLVX) & Maintenance Facility, Oakland, CA

AVA’s Role: Anil Verma Associates, Inc. (AVA) was responsible for developing the facility program and served as Lead Architect/Engineer for the maintenance facility during the preliminary engineering design phase, providing architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and systems engineering services. AVA also prepared an evaluation report assessing maintenance strategies for the Livermore Extension DMU-EMU system.

Description: The maintenance facility campus was planned north of I-580 in the Livermore Hills, immediately east of Las Positas College and approximately one mile beyond the proposed Isabel Station. The facility was designed as a two-story, steel-frame building with a high-bay area spanning three maintenance tracks and a mezzanine/catwalk level providing access to vehicle roofs. The building program also included spare-parts and shop areas; offices for management, operations, and shop staff; a loading dock; circulation areas; and a yard control tower. The facility was planned to support full and primary maintenance activities for wayside and station-related equipment, as well as the DMU-EMU vehicle fleet. Maintenance functions included rebuilding traction motors and/or diesel engines; maintaining elevators, escalators, fare-collection equipment, catenary, and power systems; rail grinding and ballast tamping; rebuilding trucks and vehicle brake equipment; vehicle HVAC maintenance; wheel truing, reprofiling, and replacement; and other fleet-support activities. Sustainability was also incorporated into the facility design, taking advantage of the large roof area and local climatic conditions.
