LAX Midfield Satellite Concourse & Tom Bradley International Terminal Expansion

Description: As part of the Los Angeles World Airports Capital Improvements Program, the Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT) at LAX was planned for expansion to accommodate a new generation of larger aircraft, including the Airbus A380, and projected increases in passenger demand. The program included additional gates at the existing TBIT facility and development of a new Midfield Satellite Concourse located apart from the existing terminal. An underground connection between the two facilities was envisioned to accommodate passenger walkways, an Automated People Mover (APM) rail system with stations, a baggage-transfer tunnel, and utility corridors. The existing Tom Bradley International Terminal was required to remain operational throughout the design and construction phases, creating significant coordination, phasing, circulation, and constructability challenges for the project team.

AVA’s Role: Anil Verma Associates, Inc. (AVA), as part of the Hatch Mott MacDonald (HMM) consultant team, was involved from the inception of the project, providing tunnel methodology studies, conceptual concourse station design, and alternative route analysis. AVA worked closely with LAWA and the consultant team to assess project needs, evaluate passenger circulation requirements, and recommend design and construction strategies for advancing the project. Following completion of the initial planning phase, AVA participated in the architectural and engineering design of the underground stations and their interfaces with the Tom Bradley International Terminal and the Midfield Satellite Concourse. AVA also designed and coordinated ancillary equipment facilities and their integration with other airport systems, including baggage handling.
