AVA’s Role: Anil Verma Associates, Inc. (AVA) provided final design services for the new Component Repair Shop, including drawings, details, calculations, and technical specifications for the HVAC; aboveground oil storage and distribution; thermal wastewater evaporator; general-service compressed-air; building plumbing; and fire-protection systems. AVA also provided mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, and fire-protection design, along with complete architectural and engineering services for a new 16,000-square-foot Service Canopy. The canopy was designed to support equipment storage, staging, cleaning, and movement through two bridge cranes providing full coverage beneath the structure. It also incorporated ventilation, lighting, and a weather-protected connection between the Component Repair Shop and Central Warehouse.
Hayward Maintenance Complex Design
Description: As part of BART’s Fleet of the Future program, the agency identified three interrelated capital-investment initiatives to ensure the system could safely, efficiently, and comfortably serve existing and future riders. The Hayward Maintenance Complex (HMC) was developed to expand BART’s maintenance and repair capacity and support the new railcar fleet for both the existing system and future system extensions. The facility was planned to maintain and store the expanded fleet. The approximately $432 million HMC program was jointly supported by BART and the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), with a funding plan developed by BART and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.
The HMC project included the acquisition and improvement of three properties containing four existing warehouse buildings adjacent to the west side of the existing Hayward Shop and maintenance yard. Two warehouse buildings were planned for demolition to accommodate construction of a new Vehicle Level Overhaul Shop and Component Repair Shop, while the remaining two warehouses were proposed for use as the Central Warehouse and Maintenance and Engineering Shop. Additional improvements included new storage tracks on undeveloped BART property east of the Hayward Yard, providing capacity for up to 250 rail vehicles. The completed Component Repair Shop was designed as an approximately 150,000-square-foot facility, including a 117,000-square-foot ground level and a 33,000-square-foot mezzanine. The facility houses the truck shop, electronic repair shop, and electro-mechanical repair shop and was designed with the capacity to maintain components supporting a fleet of at least 1,000 railcars.
