BART Powell Street Station Improvement

Description: Powell Street Station is one of the busiest stations in the BART system and serves as a major transit hub in Downtown San Francisco. The station provides access to key destinations including SoMa (South of Market), the Powell Street cable car, Union Square, the Contemporary Jewish Museum, Yerba Buena Gardens, and the Moscone Convention Center. The underground station consists of three primary levels — the BART platform, MUNI platform, and concourse — and functions as an important transfer point between BART and MUNI services. The improvement planning also considered the station’s role as a future transfer point serving the Central Subway.

AVA’s Role: Anil Verma Associates, Inc. (AVA), as a subconsultant to Arup, provided space-planning services for improvements to Powell Street Station. AVA evaluated station functionality, circulation, space adjacencies, and integration of the main entrance with Hallidie Plaza and Powell Street. The work included assessment of existing station issues and multidisciplinary space-planning coordination to help establish guidelines for future station improvements. Because Powell Street is a complex underground station dating from the 1970s and located in a dense downtown environment, the planning effort required close attention to technical, operational, architectural, and circulation considerations.

AVA’s Fee: $199,995 Completion: 2013–2014
