Port of Los Angeles Harbor Administration Building – Lobby Remodeling
Description: The Harbor Administration Building serves the Port of Los Angeles, Southern California’s major gateway for international trade. Designed by noted architect John Carl Warnecke and dedicated in 1981, the building features a distinctive industrial architectural expression, with exposed exterior steel elements recalling the cargo cranes found throughout the Port. Over time, the interior lobby spaces had become dated and less suited to the building’s professional business environment. AVA was engaged to revitalize the main entrance lobby and the second-, third-, and fourth-floor elevator lobbies while respecting the character of the original architecture. AVA developed up to three interior design concepts for the designated lobby areas and prepared a preliminary design based on the Port’s selected concept. The scope also included mechanical and electrical engineering coordination and preparation of concept-level cost estimates. Following the Port’s approval of the preliminary design, AVA prepared full construction contract documents for implementation.
AVA’s Role: Anil Verma Associates, Inc. (AVA) provided interior architectural design and engineering services for the renovation and remodeling of the Harbor Administration Building’s main entrance lobby and the elevator lobbies on the second, third, and fourth floors. AVA developed multiple interior design concepts, advanced the selected concept through preliminary design, and provided associated mechanical and electrical engineering services, concept-level cost estimates, and final construction contract documents.
