BART – Earthquake Safety Program, Station Structures – A Line, Bay Fair Aerial Station, San Leandro, CA
AVA’s Role: Anil Verma Associates, Inc. (AVA) was responsible for reviewing and designing modifications to existing utilities affected by the seismic retrofit of BART’s Bay Fair Station. AVA evaluated utilities that required removal, relocation, support, or protection in place and developed recommendations for each condition. The work included field investigations of existing utilities, review of as-built drawings and utility tracking logs, and preparation of the project Utility Plan.
Description: Bay Fair Aerial Station was constructed in the early 1970s as part of BART’s heavy-rail transit system serving communities throughout the Bay Area. The station structure consists of 11 double-column, cast-in-place reinforced concrete bents founded on combined pile footings. The platform girders are 6-foot-deep, cast-in-place reinforced concrete tee-shaped sections. Station entrances, ticket vending machines, restrooms, and station agent booths are located at grade on the concourse level adjacent to the street, with pedestrian access and connections to surrounding surface parking lots.
