AVA’s Role: AVA prepared landscape construction documents, specifications, and performed construction administration services during implementation for a creek / habitat restoration project in San Jose. As part of the storm water mitigation for the Berryessa Extension project extending from Fremont to San Jose with stations in Milpitas and San Jose, AVA, as part of the design build team, served as the architect or record, landscape architect, and engineer for the stations, street crossings, and the Upper Penitencia Creek Wetland Mitigation project.

Penitencia Creek

Description: As part of the $780 million BART extension project, AVA provided architectural design services for two heavy-rail stations in Milpitas and San Jose. In addition to the station campuses and street crossings, the project required stormwater mitigation improvements. Upper Penitencia Creek was extensively restored from a narrow, channelized storm-drain corridor into a wider, open creek environment that reestablished habitat for native plants and indigenous wildlife. AVA incorporated log retaining walls, enhanced stormwater outfall areas, rock outcroppings, and plantings propagated from source material collected within a 10-mile radius of the site into the landscape architectural construction documents. The design drawings and completed improvements were reviewed and approved by multiple agencies, including BART, VTA, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, the City of San Jose, and applicable utility agencies. AVA also provided design services during construction and coordinated the approvals required for final installation.
