Mid-City/Exposition Light Rail Transit Design/Build Project, Contract No. E0016
AVA’s Role: Anil Verma Associates, Inc. (AVA) served in multiple key roles as part of the design-build team. AVA was responsible for the final design of a maintenance facility and yard; however, a suitable site could not be secured during the first phase of the project. AVA evaluated and developed concepts for three potential sites along the Metro Blue Line corridor to assess their feasibility for light-rail operations. Each site presented distinct challenges, including land-acquisition constraints, insufficient site area, and operational limitations. To support future site selection, AVA developed urban design guidelines that could be applied to any feasible maintenance-facility location.
At a later stage, AVA reviewed alternative maintenance-facility site layouts for the City of Santa Monica as part of Exposition Phase II, after no suitable site was identified along the Expo Phase I or Metro Blue Line corridors. AVA also provided quality-control services, field inspection, quality-control audits, and administrative support to the Fluor Daniel/Flatiron design-build team during the first phase of the project.
Description: The Mid-City/Exposition Light Rail Transit project was delivered as a design-build extension of Metro’s light-rail system from Los Angeles to Culver City. Phase I extended more than 9.5 miles and included eight new stations, linking with two existing operating stations. The system was designed with a dual-track configuration located within the center or curb lanes of selected streets and along the Exposition right-of-way. High-platform stations were incorporated, similar to those used on the Metro Blue Line light-rail system. Exposition LRT Phase II was planned to extend the line farther west to the City of Santa Monica.
Size: 9.6 miles, 8 new stations, 2 currently operating stations
