Fullerton Transportation Center, Pedestrian Bridge Elevator Addition

City of Fullerton

AVA’s Role: Anil Verma Associates, Inc. (AVA) served as Architect-of-Record and Engineer-of-Record for the installation of new elevators serving the pedestrian overpass bridge that connects the two side platforms on opposite sides of the Metrolink and Amtrak tracks. AVA designed the improvements to comply with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility requirements and coordinated construction while the busy station remained fully operational. AVA planned and designed the project and provided construction administration services through completion.

Transportation Center & Pedestrian Bridge Elevator Addition

Description: The Fullerton Transportation Center is a major passenger rail station and bus transit center in Orange County, California. The historic transportation hub is served by Amtrak and the Metrolink commuter rail system and functions as an important regional transfer point.

Scope of Work: The City of Fullerton commissioned AVA to design two new service-type, public-use passenger elevators; renovate the existing restrooms within the historic station building; and upgrade the parking facilities and accessible paths of travel to comply with current ADA standards. The two new elevator towers supplemented the two elevators already operating at the station. Located on opposite sides of the tracks and connected to the existing pedestrian overpass bridge, the towers consist of exposed steel structures clad in glass. The elevator cabs were designed with clear safety-glass panels within stainless-steel frames, providing passengers with unobstructed views of their surroundings and enhancing safety through increased visibility. Restroom improvements included reconfiguring toilet compartments, installing grab bars and accessible accessories, and relocating selected plumbing fixtures. Parking improvements included relocating accessible parking spaces, installing appropriate signage, and providing pedestrian striping and ramps along the accessible path of travel. The project was designed and constructed in accordance with current accessibility criteria, building codes, and seismic standards.
