Staten Island Ferry Terminals — Whitehall, West Midtown & St. George, New York, NY

AVA’s Role: AVA provided oversight of the design and construction of glass-and-steel station headhouses for the Staten Island Ferry terminals and private ferry terminals, as well as canopies for elevated lines within the New York City Transit system.

Description: The $130 million St. George Ferry Terminal on Staten Island includes a 40-foot-high glass wall. The 200,000-square-foot West Midtown Ferry Terminal, a 160- to 176-foot floating glass-and-steel hull, is located at West 39th Street in Manhattan. During construction of the $200 million Whitehall Ferry Terminal at the southern tip of Manhattan, significant problems were discovered with the structural support for the glass curtain wall. The terminal features a 19,000-square-foot waiting room with a 75-foot-high glass entry wall that also provides a connection to the South Ferry Subway Station. AVA was asked to provide an independent assessment of the causes of the structural issues and recommend corrective measures.
