Metro Red Line Additional Elevators at Metro Rail Stations, Contract No. C1073,
AVA’s Role: Anil Verma Associates, Inc. (AVA) designed the HVAC and plumbing systems required for the additional elevators, including air-conditioning systems for the elevator equipment rooms to improve elevator availability.
Description: This design-bid-build project involved the design and installation of additional elevators at three key Metro Rail stations constructed approximately 30 years earlier. The improvements brought the stations into compliance with current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements, increased passenger capacity, and provided elevator redundancy to reduce the impact of service outages. A primary challenge was integrating the elevator controls, communications, and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems into existing underground facilities that, in most cases, were not designed to accommodate additional elevators. The project also required fitting new HVAC equipment within constrained underground rooms to remove equipment-generated heat and improve ventilation. Extensive coordination with the City was necessary for improvements outside the stations, including the placement of elevators and HVAC compressor units within a dense urban environment containing major development projects and Grand Park Los Angeles, which serves as an outdoor concert venue.
