Description
AVA was selected to design a new commuter rail train depot that can serve as an ‘iconic’ gateway to the City of Goleta. The project is split into two separate design projects which are developed as follows: (1) the main roadway and access improvements project, along South La Patera Lane, between Hollister Avenue and the proposed depot; and (2) a station depot building, a new parking facility, and accommodations for buses, vanpools, and bicycles at the station site, located south of the existing Amtrak train platform. The depot building and parking are located on land owned by the city and located immediately adjacent to the existing platform. The site consists of an existing warehouse, occupying roughly half of the project site. The proposed train depot contains building will include a café, lobby, ticketing area, waiting room, community room station, room for rail history display, restrooms/ shower/ changing facilities, bike storage, and baggage storage lockers and more. In addition, the design of the depot will accommodate opportunities for public art projects both inside and outside the building. In order to improve access and create a better sense of arrival, South La Patera Lane is being re-configured to accommodate improvements such as bike lanes, sidewalks, and LID capable landscaped parkways. Environmental documentation in accordance with the city’s 2008 Environmental Review Guidelines is being prepared for California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) compliance for these projects.
Under a separate contract with LOSSAN, AVA is also responsible for managing and/or designing new platforms, canopies underpasses etc. In addition, trackwork is included for to provide for train storage and a center platform to improve passenger convenience and better train operations.
